This popular program showcases a variety of architectural styles, neighborhoods and residences — including single-family homes and contemporary renovations. 826 Valencia Tenderloin Center wins the AIA San Francisco 2017 Special Commendation Award for Social Responsibility
IA is honored to have received the 2017 AIA San Francisco Special Commendation Award for Social Responsibility. The 826 Valencia Tenderloin Center is a transformative project converting a dilapidated corner-liquor-store into a space of learning and delight where children become authors and the poet-laureates of their community. The whimsical retail space provides the “front” for an inclusive safe-haven for the imaginations of the neighborhood.
Saratoga Beach House in The New York Times
The Saratoga Beach House has been published in the Home and Garden section of the New York Times. The article describes the house and the story of its completion, and features and article with Andrew Dunbar of Interstice Architects, the clients, Shaun and Stephanie Mesher.
826 Valencia Tenderloin Center wins IIDA NCC 2017 Honor Award
826 Valencia Tenderloin Center took home the International Interior Design Awards Northern California Chapter 2017 Honor Award! Serving as a place of whimsy before entering the workshop, the retail store, “King Carl’s Emporium,” is named after 826’s San Francisco Mission location’s pet pufferfish, Carl. 826 Valencia Tenderloin Center Wins CONTRACT Interiors Award
826 Valencia Tenderloin won the 2017 Contract Magazine 2017 Interiors:Education award. The project, which was done in collaboration with Gensler, MK Think, Architect Jonas Kellner, supports the creative writing skills of under-resourced children in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood. Contract design award jury said of the project, “This inspired interior promotes creativity and exploration, creating an unexpected wonderland with a richness of spirit. One is transported into a tactile fantasy space that is full of surprises. It is exciting that they did this on a very minimal budget.”

The 826 Valencia Tenderloin Center was featured in the January issue of RETROFIT. The in-depth article features details about the unique collaborative design and construction process for the project, which included over 60 local subcontractors and designers with their time and materials donated in-kind or at cost, resulting in over 2 million dollars that will be spent on creating more free programs for children. Minna Street DREAM:shop honored with Kirby Ward Fitzpatrick Award from the Architectural Foundation of San Francisco
On Thursday, May 12th, at the Architectural Foundation of San Francisco Annual Awards Breakfast, INTERSTICE Architect’s Minna Street DREAM:shop was honored with the prestigious 2016 Kirby Ward Fitzpatrick Award, for excellence in Architectural Design. DREAM:shop is as a minimalist “open-ended” event space for an avid maker-client and his creative partners to experiment and ideate. Located in the central Mission, this simple plywood lined tube serves as a hybrid space for office, event space, laboratory and workshop all organized around a single three level vertical service core of reclaimed myrtle Wood.
