DESIGN ASSOCIATE

Joanna’s background in engineering, architecture and landscape has informed her recent work at INTERSTICE, applying her skills toward addressing environmental challenges through design in urban projects at varied scales.  She has fine-tuned her skills in all phases of landscape planning, design, and implementation, with exceptional skills in modeling and grading, and most recently gaining experience in detailing and construction observation. Joanna has quickly become an important team member on mixed-use and single- and multi-family projects and urban design visioning in the office’s Polk Corridor work in San Francisco.

Prior to receiving her master’s degree from UC Berkeley, Joanna worked in landscape planning and design for 4 years, developing skills in both urban planning and design. She has participated in numerous urban design competitions and research projects from 2016-2019 including waterfront projects and transit-oriented town plans in Beijing. Building on this, she worked on community-focused design strategies, urban data analysis, and practical community engagement, while at UC Berkeley.

Both in and out of the office Joanna loves outdoor activities, spending her weekends hiking and running throughout San Francisco.   Her insights into nature in the urban environment combined with an eagerness to create sustainable, equitable and sustaining projects align particularly well with IA’s client aspirations.
